How to Calculate a Golf Handicap
Posted on Monday, 6th June 2011 in GolfGolf handicap is measured numerically for the playing ability of an amateur golfer, not for a professional one, on the basis of strokes played on a golf course. It enables the players of different capabilities to compete with each other on similar conditions. It is calculated according to the norms of golf clubs or national associations for golf that may vary in different countries. The lower the Golf Handicap of the player the stronger is the player.
Handicap in golf is represented by the number of strokes played by the player over the number of strokes played by scratch golfer, having 0 Handicap.
Calculating the Golf Handicap
Initially you have to find out your starting handicap with the help of 3 scorecards of the games played on 18 holes, standard scratch score of the course you are playing and adjusted gross score. It is calculated as an arithmetic formulation of number of strokes, below or above par, the player is supposed to play. It is calculated as per the rules of National Golf Associations of individual countries.
The winner golfer is found out by comparing the net score of the competing golfers which is the difference of golf handicap of the player and the gross score. The lowest is the winner. The handicap of a player shows his capability that decides the frequency of the strokes played by the player so the lower is the handicap the better is his performance. Handicap in golf is calculated on the current strokes played by the golfer thus it is variable depending on the current score of the player.
Handicaps are calculated by many factors, such as recent scores of the player, rating of course and slope rating of the course for the recent strokes. You need to play not less than five rounds and maximum 20 rounds for your golf handicap calculator to calculate.
The gross score of the player, obtained as the average number of strokes played by the player on 18 holes, after subtracting course rating and multiplied by 113 and dividing by the slop rating of the course gives you the Handicap Differential. The formula goes on as:
Handicap differential = (ESC score – course rating) × 113 / (slope rating)
Now to get your Handicap, repeat the process for each of your score to get various differentials. Multiplying the lowest differential with .96 you will give you the required handicap.
